HELPFUL HINTS

This "quick reference" provides a few helpful hints for posting images in the forums and galleries.  For more information on how to use various functions of the forum and gallery, please see the Frequently Asked Questions section in the forum.

Attaching Pictures to a Post.  To attach pictures to a forum post, expand the "additional options" menu at the bottom of the posting window and use the browse button to find the file on your computer.  Double-clicking on the file will add it into the "attach" window.  You can attach up to 2 images by clicking "more attachments" and selecting additional attachments.  The images will appear in your post when you post the images.  Each image is limited to a 1000 pixel dimension on its longest side, and a file size of 300KB.  Images should be in JPG format.
If your file is larger than these criteria and you don't know how to resize it or don't want to take the time, you can still post the image in a gallery and then link to the image from a gallery post.  See instructions on "embedding" images in the Forum Admin FAQs section.

Posting Images in a Forum Gallery.  UPDATED FOR "NEW" GALLERY SOFTWARE  Posting in a Forum Gallery is fairly easy (although not quite as easy as with the "old" gallery software).  Click on "upload file" in the top right menu of the Gallery window.  (You need to be logged in to see this option.)  In the "upload file" window, click the "Browse" button and select the picture you wish to add from your computer's files.  Images should be in JPG format and are limited to a 1000 pixel dimension on their longest side.   (I recommend using a size of 800 pixels or smaller, since this size image will display better on most monitiors.)  I've turned on the gallery option to "resize image if larger than designated size."  Therefore, if you don't know how to resize your image, or you just don't want to take the time, you can still post in a gallery.  Please be aware that the automatic resizing may take several minutes (you will see a progress bar on the bottom of the window).  You should also be aware that trying to post an image over 6MB in size will cause the upload to fail.  (If you have Photoshop, I've provided a very useful script in the download section of this site that can help you prepare your images for posting in the galleries.)

Once you have selected the pictures you want to upload, click the "continue" button at the bottom of the screen.  The software will upload the pictures to the site and then ask you to click "continue" to select the albums you want assign the images to.  Click "continue" and select the album you want to post in from the drop down menu. (Click on the blue down arrow on on the right of the album field to access the album menu.)  Complete the "Title" and "Description" fields and then click the "Continue" button at the bottom of the window.  Note that the Title, Description, and Keywords entries will already be filled in if you have previously entered this information in the IPTC data for your image.  You can add to the IPTC information or modify it by entering the appropriate text in these blocks.  If you forget to select an album before clicking on "Continue," you will receive an error window.  Just hit the "back" button on your browser to get back to the previous screen and select your album.

Posting Images in your Personal Gallery.  You will need to add at least one album to your member gallery before you can post pictures.  Create an album by clicking on the "Create/order my albums" button in the CENTER menu at the top of your Gallery window.  In the Album Manager window, create a new album by clicking on the "new" button.  This will create a new album, creatively named "new album."  It's a good idea to rename this album by typing in a new name in the text entry field at the bottom of the window.  After you've named your album click the "Apply modifications" button to create the album.  Now that you have created the album, you can add pictures following the instructions for "posting images in a Forum Gallery" as detailed above.  Once you have set up your personal gallery, you can access it directly by clicking on the "My Gallery" link in the top right menu bar, or through the Member Galleries link on the Gallery page.
